Information and Application for UROP 3200
A new 1-credit UROP course, Undergraduate Research Opportunities with Mini-conference Experience (UROP3200) is offered starting from Summer 2022-23. Please refer to the course outline here for more information.
Students who are in their Year 2 Summer and have received [TWO passing grades in UROP 1100] OR [a passing grade in UROP 1100 and UROP 2100] from the same faculty supervisor are eligible to join.
Remarks:
By taking two regular UROP courses together with the new UROP 3200 course, students can earn 3 credits to be counted under the UxOP (Undergraduate experiential Opportunities Program) in the 30-credit Common Core framework, starting from Fall 2024-25. Please note that the UROP 3200 course credit earned during the pilot run, i.e. before Fall 2024-25, will only be counted as a free elective credit.

The student's supervisor can receive a research fund of HK$15,000 in recognition of their mentorship of the student.
Keynote Speaker

Prof. YANG Yansong
Assistant Professor
Department of Electronic and Computer Engineering
Title: From UG to PG, From Learning to Research
Abstract: Moving from UG to PG is more than a new degree: it’s a shift from learning answers to generating them. We begin with the research mindset: how to scan literature quickly, spot real gaps, and translate broad interests into testable questions with success metrics. Use AI tools responsibly to speed, not replace, your reasoning, but keep the critical thinking and decisions yours. This talk lays out a simple roadmap for moving from coursework to real research in a way that fits you. Start by knowing yourself and choosing an area you truly like, so curiosity sustains effort. Then we’ll build the right UG habits (logic, efficiency, clean data) and show how to motivate your advisor with proactive updates and results. You’ll see why chasing only a degree leads to regret, how to align projects with your strengths to compete well, and how real progress comes from pushing past “good enough” to polish and perfect.
Biography: Yansong YANG is currently an Assistant Professor in the Department of Electronics and Computer Engineering at The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology. He established the Radio Frequency Microsystem (RFMY) lab at HKUST. His lab focuses on research into multi-physics microsystem technologies that integrate electrical, mechanical, and acoustic domains, with the goal of enabling single-chip platforms for signal processing, sensing, and computation. Current research focuses on the design methodologies, nano- and microscale fabrication techniques, as well as AI design and AI manufacturing of next-generation ultrasonic and radio-frequency microelectromechanical systems (Ultrasonic/RF MEMS). He has been awarded the 2023 Early Career Award from the IEEE Electron Devices Society (EDS) and the 2025 IEEE Ultrasonics Early Career Investigator Award from the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society (UFFC). He has received the Best Paper Award at the 2018 IEEE International Microwave Symposium and at both the 2019 and 2025 IEEE International Ultrasonics Symposium. He was also a finalist for the Best Paper Award at the 2018 IEEE International Frequency Control Symposium and the Advanced Practices Paper Competition Award at the 2020 IEEE International Microwave Symposium. Additionally, he received the 2019 P. D. Coleman Graduate Research Award from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign (UIUC) and the 2022 Microwave Prize from the IEEE Microwave Theory and Techniques Society (MTT-S). He is currently serving as the Technical Committee Chair for Microelectromechanical Systems in IEEE EDS, a Technical Committee Member for RF MEMS and Microwave Acoustics in IEEE MTT-S, and a Technical Committee Member for the IEEE International Conference on Micro Electro Mechanical Systems. Additionally, he serves as an Editor for IEEE Transactions on Electron Devices and an Associate Editor for IEEE Electron Devices Magazine.
Registration will be opened soon!
