Project Description
This RAship will involve historical research into the history of prisons, penal colonies and quarantine centers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Korea, focusing on their expansion and growth during the 20th Century, and on the social impact of these institutions on public health, disease control and inmate reform and recovery.

Applicant's Roles
Students will perform historical research working with primary and secondary source documents related to specific prisons, penal colony locations and quarantine centers in Hong Kong, Taiwan, Japan and Korea.
Applicant's Learning Objectives
Students will improve their research and writing skills and learn more about the historic context of public safety and public health institutions and appreciate how these institutions have evolved over time.
