Active support to experimental studies for research in aero-acoustics
Project Description
Scientific research heavily relies on experimental activities, which are the sole way to validate theories and computations. This particularly applies to the field of aerodynamic and acoustic (or aero-acoustic) research, for which HKUST possesses state-of-the-art facilities and equipment (e.g. the HKUTS’s Aerodynamic and Acoustics Facility, AAF - https://aaf.ust.hk/).

This UROP project will consist in supporting actual aero-acoustic experimental studies that are currently performed using AAF means, in regard to various topics (aerospace, wind energy, sport engineering, etc). To this end, the UROP participant(s) will first exploit and/or complement prior experimental tests pertaining to aerodynamics and/or acoustics. In a second time, the UROP participant(s) will support on-going, larger-scale experimental activities in aero-acoustics, which are currently conducted by two Research Post-Graduate students (PhD and MPhil), helping them to consolidate their experimental activities through punctual, well-identified actions.

Successfully conducting this UROP project will require the UROP participant(s) to acquire and master specific knowledge and skills, whether fundamental (aerodynamics, acoustics, etc.) or more practical (conducting and exploiting a laboratory experiment, working in a team). On another hand, this UROP project shall provide the UROP participant(s) an exciting opportunity to taste the water of what R&D is all about, by tackling some challenging problems of experimental nature within an actual research framework.
