Explore Real Earthquake Records and Discover What Makes Shaking Severe
Project Description
Earthquakes do not all shake in the same way. Some are short and sharp, while others continue for much longer and may cause repeated damage. In this computer-based project, students will explore real earthquake records from different parts of the world and help the research team organize them into a reliable database. Students will learn how to read an earthquake graph, compare the length and strength of different records, spot incomplete or unusual data, and create simple visual comparisons. Prepared Excel, Python or MATLAB templates will do the more difficult calculations; students may choose tools that match their experience. The results will help postgraduate researchers plan laboratory tests of timber walls. No previous knowledge of earthquakes or programming is required—curiosity, care and an interest in working with data are more important
