Build, Shake and Observe Timber Wall Connections
Project Description
What happens to a timber wall connection when an earthquake pushes it back and forth many times? Students in this project will help answer that question by preparing and testing small cross-laminated timber (CLT) components. They will measure and mark timber pieces, install screws or bolts, place sensors at labelled positions and help check the specimen before testing. During the laboratory test, a machine will slowly push and pull the component to represent earthquake movement. Students will photograph and record visible changes such as movement, dents, cracks or bent fasteners. Afterwards, they will use prepared templates to turn the measurements into simple graphs and compare different specimens. No previous timber or earthquake-engineering knowledge is needed. All fabrication, equipment use and data processing will be taught and closely supervised.

Applicant's Roles
