Climate-Ready Transit Stations: International Lessons for the MTR
Project Description
As climate change intensifies, urban rail systems are increasingly expected to do more than move passengers. During extreme heat, typhoons, flooding, and other disruptions, transit stations can function as critical resilience infrastructure by providing safe, accessible, and trusted spaces for the public. Yet there remains limited understanding of how transit operators around the world are adapting stations to protect vulnerable users during climate-related events.

This project examines how leading metro systems, including those in Singapore, Tokyo, Seoul, London, and selected Chinese cities, are integrating climate resilience into station planning, operations, passenger communication, accessibility, and emergency preparedness. The student will conduct a structured review of academic literature, industry reports, operator guidance documents, and public information to identify practical measures that enhance passenger safety, comfort, inclusion, and trust during climate-related disruptions.

Particular attention will be given to the needs of vulnerable groups, including older adults, persons with disabilities, carers, low-income passengers, ethnic minorities, and individuals with limited linguistic proficiency. The project will evaluate how international transit systems address challenges such as heat stress, crowding, wayfinding, accessibility barriers, communication during emergencies, and continuity of service.

The project will culminate in the development of a Climate-Ready Transit Station Framework that identifies good practices and potential lessons for Hong Kong’s MTR system. Findings will contribute to ongoing research on climate resilience, inclusive mobility, and urban infrastructure adaptation.

Applicant's Roles
