The Geometry and Physics of Wrinkling
Project Description
Wrinkling of two-dimensional membranes occurs commonly throughout nature in physical and biological systems. When a membrane is stretched in one direction, ripples are formed that are sinusoidally shaped in the direction perpendicular the stretching direction. In this project, we will review and understand what is known about the geometry and physics of wrinkling, and we will plan experimental table-top measurements to test the underlying theoretical concepts using common, everyday membrane materials.

Applicant's Roles
The student will read publications on the theory and experimental studies of wrinkling of membranes. Through independent study and weekly meetings with the supervisor, the student will develop an understanding of wrinkling and will participate in developing a simple table-top apparatus to test these ideas on common membrane materials such as polymer films.
