History and Origins of History and Philosophy of Science
Project Description
The project aims to examine the origins of history and philosophy of science in the 1940s - 1960s. It will examine the works of some pioneers, including Dingle, Hesse,Buchdahl, Hanson, and Toulmin, which were not systematically studied before. Such a study will revise the received view on the history of the philosophy of science.

Applicant's Roles
Students are expected to read original scientific texts (published and unpublished) and secondary (philosophical and historical) literature and develop coherent arguments concerning the origins and development of philosophy of science. As a result, students are expected to write a cohesive philosophical essay on the topic.
Applicant's Learning Objectives
Students will be able to have a familiarity of the works of some pioneers in philosophy of science. They will also be able to have a sophisticated understanding of the history of philosophy of science. Moreover, students will be able to critically and independently examine various philosophical views on scientific methodology and scientific change.
