A Hyperlinked Edition of the Huainanzi
Project Description
The Huainanzi 淮南子 is a highly intertextual and comprehensive scripture from the early Western Han 漢 dynasty (206 BCE-9 CE) that Liu An 劉安 (c. 179-122 BCE), the king of Huainan 淮南, presumably produced with Masters of Methods (fangshi 方士) and several other retainers in the middle of the second century BCE. Despite its obvious intertextual style, however, there is no edition of the Huainanzi that consequently displays this peculiar feature of Liu An’s text. In this DH project, we will create an online platform that houses a hyperlinked edition of the Huainanzi 淮南子. It will display both its rhymed form and intertextual design, enabling users to compare the Huainanzi’s original text with its various textual parallels from pre-Han writings. It will visualize the text’s intertextual design with the help of a color-coded, hyperlinked interface. By moving the cursor over the hyperlinked and color-coded passages, a second window would open displaying the respective parallel passage and its immediate textual context. In so doing, the projects will enable scholars to more efficiently explore the Huainanzi and its intertextual design.
